23 augustus mocht Stichting-FAN weer RideATAXIA Europe organiseren: De FAntastische fietstocht 3.0. We zijn ontzettend blij met de enorme opkomst! Ongeveer € 13.500 opgehaald voor FA.
De Routes
Zeker 200 deelnemers hadden zich ingeschreven voor één van de vele routes! Net als twee jaar geleden was de start en de finish bij TML Dommelstreek in Geldrop, ook waren er weer professioneel uitgepijlde routes van 3, 17, 50 en 81 km op verharde wegen (toegankelijk voor veel verschillende fietsen).
De 17 km route was het meest populair en met bakfietsen en kinderstoeltjes voor op de fiets gingen verschillende kinderen mee. In 2021 was de 3 km route op de fietsbaan (voor rollers en wandelaars), deze editie was ook deze route net als in 2023 uitgezet door Geldrop, deze route had ook veel inschrijvingen!
Doel van RideATAXIA
Geld ophalen was zeker een belangrijk doel van deze RideATAXIA, maar zeker ook bekendheid voor FA. Bij Stichting-FAN zijn we ervan overtuigd dat we samen sterker zijn! Om geneesmiddelen te realiseren zijn onderzoeken nodig en om dat mogelijk te maken zijn andere onderzoeken (zoals het FA-PNS onderzoek en het UNIFAI onderzoek in het RadboudUMC) nodig. Ook het onderzoek naar de kwaliteit van leven bij mensen met FA is van belang en daarom hebben we dit onderzoek bij de FAntastische fietstocht 3.0 ook gepromoot.
Er waren ongeveer 12 tot 15 deelnemers met FA, uit Nederland, België, Duitsland, Oostenrijk en Kyle Bryant, bedenker van rideATAXIA, uit de US. We mochten verder veel FAmilie verwelkomen!
Veel van de Nederlanders die aanwezig waren doen echter al mee aan deze onderzoeken. Dus bij deze een oproep aan alle (Nederlandse) mensen met FA: ‘Om de doelstelling het genezen van FA te bereiken, doe mee aan wetenschappelijk onderzoek!’ En ook: ‘Om de FAmilie te kunnen uitbreiden hopen we jullie bij de volgende editie (in Nederland) te zien!’
Kyle Bryant
Kyle, de oprichter en evenementendirecteur van rideATAXIA bij FARA (de Amerikaanse patiëntenorganisatie voor FA), was dus ook aanwezig. In 2019 heb ik hem ontmoet in Duitsland die toen RideATAXIA Europe organiseerde en later in 2022 toen ik op vakantie was in New York. In de eerste helft van juli kreeg ik bericht van hem dat hij zou deelnemen, super gaaf! Erg leuk hem weer te ontmoeten en ook de internationale interesse groeide door zijn deelname.
Donaties
Het online inschrijfgeld betaald door deelnemers (12 euro per volwassene en 5 euro voor een kind) en daarbij de mogelijkheid voor extra donaties hebben ongeveer €4.000 opgeleverd.
Door particuliere donaties en door inschrijvingen van bedrijfs- en verenigingsteams is ook nog bijna €1.300 rechtstreeks overgemaakt aan Stichting-FAN.
Dit jaar was er weer een FAntastische donatie van €7.200 van een stichting die opgericht is voor twee kinderen met FA, maar door een positief veranderde situatie ophoud met bestaan.
Dit jaar hadden we ook weer een loterij georganiseerd, waarbij gesponsorde prijzen konden worden gewonnen. Hiermee, met de verkoop van eten (voornamelijk broodjes hamburger) en extra donaties die dag hebben ook nog ongeveer €1.000 opgehaald.
Doordat we veel eten en ook andere benodigdheden gesponsord kregen, hebben we weinig kosten gemaakt om de RideATAXIA mogelijk te maken. In totaal hebben we ongeveer €13.500 euro opgehaald!
Bedankt iedereen voor het organiseren, meedoen en/of doneren. Speciale dank aan mijn medeorganisatoren: Benni, Frans, Ron & Esther, TML Dommelstreek, de extra hulpen die dag: Emmelot, Tessa & Tom, de Europese FAmilie en natuurlijk Kyle! Met jullie inzet zijn we weer een stap dichterbij geneesmiddelonderzoek.
On August 23rd, Stichting-FAN was once again organizing RideATAXIA Europe: The FAntastic Ride 3.0. We are thrilled with the large turnout! Approximately €13,500 was raised for FA.
The Routes
At least 200 participants registered for one of the many routes! Just like two years ago, the start and finish were at TML Dommelstreek in Geldrop. Professionally marked routes of 3, 17, 50, and 81 km were also available on paved roads (accessible for a wide variety of bicycles).
The 17 km route was the most popular, and several children participated with cargo bikes and child seats. In 2021, the 3 km route was on TML Dommelstreek’s training path (for wheelchairs and walkers). This year, just like in 2023, the route was through Geldrop, and it also attracted many registrations!
RideATAXIA Goal
Raising money was certainly a key goal of this RideATAXIA, but raising awareness for FA was also crucial. At Stichting-FAN, we are convinced that together we are stronger! Research is needed to develop cures, and to make this possible, other studies (such as the FA-PNS study and the UNIFAI study at Radboud University Medical Center) are essential. Research into the quality of life of people with FA is also important, which is why we promoted a study on this during the Fantastic Ride 3.0.
Approximately 12 to 15 participants with FA were present, from the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Austria, and Kyle Bryant, the creator of rideATAXIA, from the US. We also welcomed many other members of our FAmily!
Many of the Dutch people present are already participating in these studies. So, here’s a call to action to all (Dutch) people with FA: “To achieve the goal of curing FA, participate in scientific research!” And also: “To expand the FAmily, we hope to see you at the next edition (in the Netherlands)!”
Kyle Bryant
Kyle, the founder and event director of rideATAXIA at FARA (the American patient organization for FA), was also present. I met him in Germany in 2019, when he was aatending RideATAXIA Europe, and later in 2022 while I was on vacation in New York. In the first half of July, I received a message from him that he would be participating, which was fantastic! It was great to meet him again, and his participation also increased international interest.
Donations
The online registration fee paid by participants (€12 per adult and €5 per child) and the opportunity for additional donations raised approximately €4,000.
Through private donations and registrations from corporate and club teams, almost €1,300 was also donated directly to Stichting-FAN.
This year, we received another fantastic donation of €7,200 from a foundation established for two children with FA, but which is now closing due to a positive change in their circumstances.
This year, we also organized a raffle with sponsored prizes. This, along with the sale of food (mainly hamburgers) and additional donations that day, raised approximately €1,000.
Because we received sponsored food and other necessities, we incurred minimal costs to make RideATAXIA possible. In total, we raised approximately €13,500!
